Afghanistan conducted yet another election on 20th August to elect a President for itself with lots of hopes for a better future tomorrow. Despite a lot of Taliban threats tothe Afghan populace not to cast their votes or else they would face severe consequences, there were a considerable number of them who turned out to exercise their voting rights. Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah were the two main contenders. For these elections the incumbent President Karzai relied on entering into alliances with unsavoury warlords and to some extent his Pashtun vote bank to carve out his victory in the elections. Abdullah Abdullah relied on the support of northern alliance, winning over some of the Pashtun votes though at a belated stage of his election campaign and on the tacit support of the network ofIndian intelligence agency ‘RAW’. Besides all this, he played up to the accusations of pre-vote rigging by the Karzai administration citing duplicate voters’ registrations and insecurity. The rhetoric of his repeated election fraud assertions during election rallies that he would certainly win the presidency if Karzai’sAdministration does not steel his votes had somewhat eroded the credibility of the elections even before the elections actually took place.

Unipolarity, unilateralism and double-standards are the hallmarks of the US-led western civilization. Israel’s missiles face Mideast, Europe and elsewhere but the Western rogue states have not objected to that. Very recently, Iran has test-fired a series of medium- and longer-range missiles that put Israel, parts of Europe and US bases in the Gulf within potential striking range. But this has been viewed as a threat to Israel and Europe

As the Obama administration faces tough choices in finding a way out of the Afghan morass, a 66-page report by General Stanley McChrystal plainly outlines the stark situation that now confronts the top military commander in Afghanistan. The ‘leaked’ report makes a case for sending additional troops to Afghanistan or else the conflict “will likely result in failure”; it says. Besides taking a candid stock of the obtaining environment, the assessment points out succinctly to the manner in which an unbridledIndian interference is pushing the chaos in Afghanistan to the extent of being intractable. Expressing a rare understanding, the report tacitly acknowledges the Pakistani imperatives to counter theIndian moves on the Afghan chessboard in order to safeguard its vital national interests.

Sociologists and economists have continuously been focusing on poverty as one of the major problems in the Third World. Poverty reflects a condition in which an individual fails to maintain a living standard sufficient for his physical and mental existence. Renowned economist, Adam Smith remarks, “Man is rich or poor according to the degree in which he can afford to enjoy the necessities, the conveniences and the amusements of human life.” Although India has rapidly been making progress in modern technologies-especially arms and ammunition with the help of the US-led western countries, yet it has the world’s largest number of poor people. According to a report, “of its more than 1 billion inhabitants, nearly 260.3 million are below the poverty line, of which 193.2 million are in the rural areas and 67.1 million are in urban areas. More than 75% of poor people reside in villages. Poverty level is not uniform across India. It is below 10% in states like Delhi, Goa, and Punjab etc. whereas it is below 50% in Bihar 43% and in Orissa 47%. It is between 30-40% in Northeastern states of Assam, Tripura, and Mehgalaya and in Southern states of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.”
